How to use this chart

A time conversion chart is the index for one question at a time. Hours and minutes become a decimal when payroll needs a number it can multiply. A decimal becomes hours and minutes when a pay stub has to be read on a clock. A pile of loose minutes becomes a decimal the same way: divide by 60. This page lists those three jobs and links each worked example to its own page.

The converter above is filled with 4 hours and 45 minutes. The minutes step is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, and 4 + 0.75 = 4.75. The dedicated page for 4 hours and 45 minutes as a decimal shows the nearby quarter hours as well. Five hours and 36 minutes is the same kind of sum: 36 ÷ 60 = 0.60, so the decimal is 5.60, not 5.36.

Going the other way is where people lose time. 8.15 hours is not 8:15. Fifteen minutes would be 0.25, so 8 hours and 15 minutes is 8.25. The fraction 0.15 × 60 is 9 minutes, which is why 8.15 in hours and minutes is 8 hours and 9 minutes. 2.25 hours is the quarter-hour case: 0.25 × 60 = 15, so it is 2 hours and 15 minutes. 1.5 hours is already a decimal, 1.50, and it is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Small fractions need the same rule. 0.53 in hours is 31 minutes and 48 seconds, a little more than a half hour, not 53 minutes. .05 of an hour is 3 minutes, because 0.05 × 60 = 3. On the minutes side, 30 minutes on a timesheet is 0.50, and 38 minutes in decimal is 0.63 after two-decimal rounding. The minutes to decimal chart lines every minute up in one table. Print minutes 0 through 59 from the printable minutes to decimal chart, and print the hour-by-minute grid, including 4 hours and 45 minutes = 4.75, from the hours and minutes to decimal chart. The decimal hours calculator and the decimal to hours calculator are the open tools when your number is not in the list. Punches that a clock rounds before this math are on the time clock rounding calculator, which applies the 7-minute rule and 6-minute tenths. The decimals 5.75, 0.83, 0.12, and 0.17 each have a row in the list below.
