- Multiply the decimal part by 60. The formula is minutes = (decimal − whole hours) × 60. For 8.15, 0.15 × 60 = 9, so the result is 8 h 9 min (8:09).
- For seconds, multiply the decimal part by 3,600, round to the nearest second, and split. If the rounded seconds are 60, carry one minute, and if the minutes are 60, carry one hour. 1.5125 hours is 1:30:45. 7.999862 hours rounds to 8:00:00.

How to Convert Hours and Minutes to Decimal
The formula is decimal hours = hours + minutes / 60. Keep the whole hours and divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 1 hour 45 minutes is 1.75. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50, not 7.30. Time Clock Decimal Conversion
Many time clocks and payroll exports print hours as a decimal, sometimes already rounded to hundredths. Read the digits after the point as a fraction of an hour, not as minutes. A report showing 38.42 hours is 38 h 25.2 min (38 h 25 min 12 sec), which is about 38:25 when you round to the nearest minute.
Rounding each value to two decimal places can shift it by up to 0.3 minutes, because 0.005 hours × 60 = 0.3. That is the width of the rounding step. Why Timesheets and Payroll Use Decimal Time
Payroll engines multiply a number by an hourly rate. They cannot multiply "7 hours 45 minutes" until that duration is 7.75. Decimal time removes that extra step and stops the mistake of writing 30 minutes as 0.30 when it is 0.50. A week of decimals adds without a minutes column: the same rule that turns one shift into a decimal turns the week into one figure an auditor can re-add. Overtime, shift differentials, and premiums are also defined per hour, so the decimal is the number those rates attach to. Round the same way on every row. Two decimal places are common; the step size is 0.3 minutes, as above.
